Yeah, no shit. And a new Call of Duty every year keeps consumers happy. 2.5 years is too long and people would lose interest. Activision make a shit tonne of money from COD, so why would they change anything?
ok here's the truth i dont really hate call of duty series i hate these students in my school all they play is call of duty and nothing else i let them borrow my game (demons souls) and they didnt like it
Yeah fair enough, your students sound like brats if you were nice enough to lend them your game and they said they didn't like it. I do understand where your coming from in terms of COD corrupting people's minds, but in small doses, it's fine.
Okay so yeah I hate the publishers and have no idea about the devs, they seem to be mindless goons, but I also don't like the way that's it's still attracting customers when nothing has changed, and the way they sell about half the game via overpriced DLC.
Anyway, I just want to compare this to some other things to give you an idea.
[link] Mirror's Edge, amazing game. Ever played it? Sadly it won't be getting a sequel? Y'know why? People like Reskins of First Person Shooters way more than artistic, immersive and enjoyable new concepts. The sad truth is, more and more companies aren't risking something new. They're trying to ensure they're staying with what people like, and trying to make it look flashier so they can attract the majority (FPS players / Call of Duty fans and Casual gamers). They tried a new concept, it didn't pay off, now they won't get the funding from EA to have another go.
Now, onto trying new things and investing in new technology. [link] / [link] I'll use Battlefield 3 as a recent example, they're not saying "Fuck it, let's recycle the same engine over and over like Call of Duty" they're saying "sure it'll cost us more money, but it'll make a better game and perhaps get more people to play". It honestly amazes me that people can tolerate the fact they're paying Abou £100/$100 a year for the same game. Yes 100, you pay $60/£50/£40 for same game as last time, with one or two added options, then you pay $15/£10 for each DLC which brings it up to about 100 if you buy them all. Great deal for a game which incorporates the same engine and textures, don't you agree?
All they have to do is show a couple of explosions and chase scenes, then say it's Call of Duty then bam 500,000 preorders without any gameplay shown.
[link] Now watch this through, can you honestly tell me that any of the head developers have taken part in more than a couple of interviews and have they ever put as much detail or effort into the game. The art director finished work yesterday, he worked on it for FOUR YEARS and he's only the art director... think about it. You're supporting developers with little interest in the community, a publisher who will fire their own developers on a whim just so they can get as much money as possible, and people who milk your wallet to the max, FOR SOMETHING YOU ALREADY OWN.
I'm sorry for my long rant, you can say "Oh they're different types of games" all you want, but it doesn't excuse the fact that people putting heart and soul into games are getting paid waaayyyyyyy less than fat men sitting in chairs, and developers who are producing the same game in the space of one and a half years.
Mirror's Edge - Rented it, finished it in around 3 minutes. Boring.
As for the rest of your rant, do you really think your average Joe video gamer gives even the slightest fuck about how a game is made? No, people play something, if they like it, they buy the next one.
Personally, I like the Battlefield series, COD, Portal, Crysis, etc; but I don't give 2 fucks if the developers/publishers are pricks, I only care about the game and whether it is good or not.
For me, gaming is just a hobby I enjoy occasionally. I don't spend hours reading up on reading up on art director's woes and such.
And sure, people will play the same shit, as long as their friends are too. Battlefield 3 could be the greatest FPS of 2011, and all 5 people online will probably enjoy the shit out of it while the rest of the online community will be not giving a fuck on COD.
They will also not be giving a fuck about the broke developers behind shitty games.
